Direct Access Colonoscopy
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. It is treatable cancer if detected early. A colonoscopy is an essential procedure used in the routine screening of colorectal cancer. This procedure allows providers to examine the inside of the large intestine with a camera and remove any suspicious-looking areas such as polyps. All adults over the age of 45 are recommended to be screened for colorectal cancer.
Like a pap smear, mammogram, etc. a colonoscopy is a routine test that protects you from colon cancer and is a part of your routine health maintenance. All insurance carriers are required by law to cover screening colonoscopy. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes, and you will be sedated during the procedure. You will not be able to drive that day and will need a driver to drive you back home. The total time you will spend at the ambulatory surgery center is roughly one and half hours. You will need to prepare for the procedure the day before with a special diet and a laxative preparation that starts in the evening. You do not need to miss work the day prior to the procedure. Further information regarding the procedure including videos can be found in the links on this page.
